# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Dolemeads? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once the pump begins pulling it.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car stands in Dolemeads.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Dolemeads, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.

- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BA2 4, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Even a short distance up Archway Street is too far to drive the car.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any Dolemeads forecourt — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very place the intake sucks from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Bath last night and never switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as no one touches your key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out.

A car left sitting around Dolemeads with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Sainsbury's, and this problem is diluted fuel.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Whether your car sits in Beechen Cliff or the centre of Dolemeads, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Somerset the vehicle is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Dolemeads

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it is not the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Widcombe CofE Junior School the top-up is hurried.

After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Excelsior Street.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Royal Oak, the car gets topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Dolemeads or the rest of Somerset, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Dolemeads: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Dolemeads Community Garden or halfway across Dolemeads.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Dolemeads, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Bath, under a mile away, makes a much larger job than crossing Dolemeads to the car park by The Pump House Chimney.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Dolemeads?

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road beside Saint John the Evangelist RC, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Dolemeads, and the van comes to it.

Three replies decide the job, and so first our technicians ask what went in, roughly the amount, plus if the motor has turned over.

Next, emptying your tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, then a test of your car.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, by Bath Spa or on a drive in Dolemeads.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Dolemeads

Dolemeads is a suburban area located on the riverside in Somerset, with a relatively low elevation of 22 metres. Dolemeads sits in close proximity to the city of Bath, being only 0.4 miles away, and is near other nearby places such as Lyncombe Hill, Bathwick, and Widcombe. Dolemeads is characterized by a high proportion of flat-type housing, which is typical of many urban areas in the South West region. Dolemeads is also situated approximately 96.2 miles west of London, making it a relatively accessible location.

## Dolemeads and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the BA postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs in Dolemeads serve much of Somerset too, Lyncombe Hill, Bathwick and Widcombe included.

Assuming won't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

Wherever the car sits — a driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers drain it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Dolemeads, a residential suburb, well.

## Dolemeads: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same.

Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight gap behind Bath Magistrates', County and Family Court.

Which fluid went in, how much, and if it ran: each Dolemeads enquiry begins with precisely that, before a figure, not after.

With them, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Next to the vehicle in Dolemeads, right now?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best move there is.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Dolemeads or anywhere in Somerset.
