# Dove Green: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till the motor pulls it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Dove Green, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Dove Green

To do:

- Pull your keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting NG16 6, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave the vehicle off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Nottingham Road.

- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Dove Green forecourt — the BP included — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same place the intake sucks from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Selston Green last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight in Dove Green leaves things worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have a problem of thin fuel.

No harm is done while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your car is in Inkerman or the centre of Dove Green, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever in Nottinghamshire the car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Dove Green?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Selston Church of England Infant and Nursery School the refill is rushed.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Meadow View, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park by Bull and Butcher, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least.

Keep it off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever in Dove Green or the rest of Nottinghamshire you are.

## Dove Green: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

It has been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, perhaps midway across Dove Green or coming back from Selston Town Football Club & Selston Town Cricket Club.

No restarting to test: pull over when it is safe, then switch it off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M1, under a mile from Dove Green, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Dove Green to park near Selston Community Partnership Library and a drive of under 15 miles for Nottingham are such different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it is noticed quickly.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Dove Green

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Dove Green: a side street near Tin Hat Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work depends on three answers, which we ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if your motor has not run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Whether it's a parking bay at Kirkby in Ashfield or a driveway in Dove Green, that is where our technicians start it and you set off.

Before leaving, we make sure it's running smoothly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains across Nottinghamshire, Dove Green included

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Dove Green also cover the locations around it, Allens Green, Hanstubbin and Rosemaryhill among them, and most of Nottinghamshire beyond, across the NG postcode area.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever your car stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Dove Green, a residential suburb, well.

## Dove Green: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so no fixed quote would be fair.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Selston Leisure Centre.

Ahead of any figure, never after, every enquiry from Dove Green opens with three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus if the engine ran.

With them, a range narrows to one firm figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## In Dove Green and still next to the vehicle?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, in Dove Green or wherever within Nottinghamshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran.
