# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Downfield? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm starts till your motor sucks it through.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Downfield.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Downfield, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which product, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Call just where you are. Quote a DD3 0 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: the engine remains off.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Haldane Avenue.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Downfield, whether it's the Asda or elsewhere.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Strathmartine last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out.

By daybreak, a car parked around Downfield with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

Blended through the diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; using the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, and so thinning it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in St Marys or the centre of Downfield alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Dundee City your car is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Downfield

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; many layouts allow it.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

The top-up is hurried outside the local primary school, because your dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Balgowan Drive.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park by Nine Maidens.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Downfield or the remainder of Dundee City you happen to be.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Downfield?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Kirkton Terrace Park or halfway across Downfield.

No restarting to check: stop when safe, then switch everything off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Downfield lies under 25 miles from the M90; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Downfield to the car park by Downfield Park is a very different job from a run towards Dundee, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been running.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's caught soon.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Downfield

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a road beside Downfield Mains Church, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Downfield, and the van travels to it.

Three replies shape the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus if your engine has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is emptied, right there.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last.

You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Downfield or in a space outside Dundee.

Our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Downfield itself

Downfield is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Dundee, situated near the coast in eastern Scotland. Downfield sits at an elevation of 87 metres, with views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby city of Dundee. Downfield is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby neighbourhoods including Baldovan, Trottick, and Brackens.

## AdBlue drains around Downfield and across Dundee City

The teams that answer AdBlue calls in Downfield also cover the places around it, Baldovan, Trottick and Brackens among them, and most of Dundee City beyond, across the DD postcode area.

Ring and check rather than guess if you are by a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Downfield, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Downfield: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so not one fixed quote would be fair.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind St Columba's Church.

For that reason, each enquiry from Downfield begins with the identical trio — what got in, how much, if it ran — before any figure.

Given those replies, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Our quote is given during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## In Downfield and still alongside the car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Dundee City, Downfield included.
