# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Downhill

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and your ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Downhill.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Downhill: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull your keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting SR5 5, or whichever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so leave it off.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short way down Ravenswood Road.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

At a forecourt around Downhill, whether it's the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car away from the petrol pump.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your motor lets out.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the same spot the intake draws from.

A motor filled on a drive in Castletown yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it eats at some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car sitting in Downhill. Only in the tank, it stays the same.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole fault.

Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; using the engine does the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Downhill or out in West Boldon, costs more than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Tyne and Wear your vehicle has stopped.

## Downhill: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

A bottle bought when heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside St John Bosco Catholic Primary School, Town End Farm, Sunderland, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the car.

Close to Kingsway Road, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

One more version: dim light, the car park by the pub in the village, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It happens most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Downhill or the remainder of Tyne and Wear, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Downhill?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been drawn through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, maybe part way across Downhill or coming back from Hylton Castle Cutting (SSSI).

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the A194(M), under 5 miles from Downhill, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Downhill to park beside Community North Sports Complex and a drive of under 5 miles for Sunderland are very distinct jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it is caught soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Downhill: what it takes

A street beside Bunny Hill Library, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Downhill, we travel to it.

What got in, about the quantity, and if your motor has been run: we ask before all else, since those decide the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains will not wash away unaided.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the system is primed with new diesel.

Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside East Boldon or on a drive around Downhill.

We make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we go.

No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains across Tyne and Wear, Downhill included

Over the SR postcode area, the teams taking AdBlue call-outs in Downhill serve most of Tyne and Wear as well, Hylton Red House, Hylton Castle and Town End Farm among them.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're by a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A van that comes to you suits Downhill, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your vehicle to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Downhill: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, and so not one single price is honest.

What shifts the price is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Bunny Hill Wellness.

What was put in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Downhill enquiry opens by asking exactly those, before a figure, never after.

When those are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Our price is given on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Downhill: still beside the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Downhill or anywhere around Tyne and Wear.
