# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dowslands: Why It Occurs

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car is in Dowslands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads about Dowslands and Kibbear carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together behind one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Dowslands?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Killams Drive, or on the way home in the car park at The Flying Horse.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it happens in Shoreditch or the middle of Dowslands, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Dowslands or a driveway over in Orchard Portman. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Taunton.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Somerset that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bilberry Grove.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Dowslands?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Esso or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Dowslands is the place it should stay.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off.

On the M5, under a mile from Dowslands, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Dowslands makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Wells — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Dowslands, and what happens next

By Holway Park Community Primary School, near Wyvern Sports and Social Club or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run, because the answers decide the work and the price.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we go.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Dowslands and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Dowslands shares its vans surrounding areas — Holway, Haygrass — all the way through TA postcodes and the wider area around them.

A postcode starting TA1 3 gets our van to you fastest.

The car stays put.

Anywhere it sits — near Sycamore Sports Hall, in a layby en route to Rowan Drive Park, at home — that's where it is drained.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St Michael's Church? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.

## The short version for Dowslands motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Somerset.
