# Doxey: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not run, it is drained and fully cleaned where the vehicle is around Doxey.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels in Tillington, as well as Doxey, carry on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Doxey?

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Doxey, perhaps outside Railway Inn on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Castlefields or the middle of Doxey, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Broadeye or a forecourt around Doxey, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Stafford, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Staffordshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Drive, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap, then check once more — making sure the diesel filler stayed closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Doxey already?

Short order, then. Top of that: your motor remains off.

Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself runs your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Shell, Esso or another — the attendants will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Doxey.

Where the engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

Doxey sits under a mile from the M6; on it, take the first exit.

A short hop across Doxey is a smaller job than a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Doxey, and what occurs next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Doxey Academy, near NT Church of God or on your own drive.

Those replies settle this work and the price, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one sets off until you have heard the quote over the phone.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Quote a postcode beginning ST16 1, and the van arrives fastest.

Shifting the car is not necessary.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a drive, a street by St Thomas and St Andrew, or a lay-by towards Castle View Park.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Universal Sports Club, ring and ask instead of guessing.
