# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Drakehouse

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Drakehouse, finding it before the engine runs usually leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels around Beighton, as well as Drakehouse, carry on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Drakehouse

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Drake House Way before work, or in the car park outside The Milestone on the way home.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, carries on.

Whether it happens in Owlthorpe or the middle of Drakehouse, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Drakehouse or a drive over in Hackenthorpe. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook says where it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Woodhouse, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is across South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Drake House Crescent.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Drakehouse?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Asda, another forecourt nearby or any other — the staff will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

On your own drive in Drakehouse? So the car remains where it is.

Where your engine has run already, pull over safely then turn the car off.

Leave the M1 — under 3 miles out of Drakehouse — at the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Drakehouse is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Sheffield, so tell us.

## When our technicians get there around Drakehouse, what occurs?

By Rainbow Forge Primary Academy, near Drakes Descent or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so we ask.

Nobody heads out before you've had our quote by phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
