# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Drypool: Why It Occurs

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's drained and fully cleaned where the car sits around Drypool.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Drypool and Wilmington carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Drypool?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a drive off Emily Street before work, or in the car park outside Robbies heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing halts it.

Whether it takes place in Garrison Side or the middle of Drypool, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Trinity Court or a forecourt in Drypool.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Hull.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere around East Riding of Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush by Warwick Street at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five is off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Drypool?

Brief order, then. First: the motor stays off.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the BP, the Shell or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Drypool.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M180 — under 15 miles out of Drypool — at the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Drypool.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Drypool

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside Victoria Dock Primary School, near The Village Hall or at home, our van comes to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those answers decide both work and quote.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour once we are there.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains around Drypool and across East Riding of Yorkshire

Over HU postcodes, our teams that cover Drypool — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Kingston upon Hull and Victoria Dock Village among them.

Fastest of all: give a HU9 1 postcode for our van.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it stands — beside Hull Castle, in a layby en route to Victoria Park, at home — that is where it is cleared.

Assuming doesn't help behind The Blade, close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to pin down; phone and ask.

## Drypool people: the short version

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in East Riding of Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
