# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dumpling Green: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Dumpling Green.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Dumpling Green and Dereham carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on every tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Dumpling Green: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Kingston Road before work, or in the car park at The Greenstone heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it in South Green or right in the centre of Dumpling Green.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Yaxham or a forecourt in Dumpling Green.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show what belongs in which inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Wymondham.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Norfolk, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of George Borrow Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Dumpling Green: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive in Dumpling Green, leave the vehicle where it sits.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M11, under 50 miles from Dumpling Green, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Norwich, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Dumpling Green.

## Our arrival in Dumpling Green, and what occurs next

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside LDS Church, or by Dereham, Toftwood Community Junior School.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since the replies determine the work and the quote.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
