# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dunscar: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits around Dunscar.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Eagley Bank, like those in Dunscar, run on two fluids; your engine gets only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Dunscar

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Higher Ridings, or at The Flag Inn on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it.

It takes seconds, whether in Cox Green or right in the heart of Dunscar.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Dunscar or a drive over in Bromley Cross. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Bromley Cross? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Greater Manchester that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Rushey Field at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Dunscar: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of that: the motor stays off.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Asda, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump.

On your own drive around Dunscar? So the car stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you're on the M61, under 10 miles from Dunscar.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Dunscar makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Salford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Dunscar, and what occurs next

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St John the Evangelist RC Primary School, Bromley Cross, Bolton, near St Andrews Church or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the answers settle the work and the price.

No one heads out before you've heard our quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

After your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Dunscar, and Greater Manchester beyond

Eagley and Toppings are among the places around Dunscar, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over BL postcodes.

Fastest of all: quote a BL7 9 postcode to our van.

Shifting the vehicle isn't necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Windsor Road Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Andrew Lane Park, a driveway.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St John the Evangelist, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Dunscar motorists, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.
