# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dunston

Stop reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Dunston, finding it before the motor runs usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven around Dunston and Teams carry another liquid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, again and again.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## Dunston: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Dunston Road, or on the way home in the car park at Dunston Social Club.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Dunston Hill or bang in the heart of Dunston.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in South Benwell or a forecourt in Dunston, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark what goes in each filler right there.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around Tyne and Wear the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Rendel Street on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Stage five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Dunston already?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Murco, Esso or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the car clear, when you ask.

Your own driveway around Dunston is where it stays.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

Dunston lies under 3 miles from the Central Motorway East; there, take the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Dunston.

## Dunston: what occurs when our engineers turn up

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Core Muscle Fitness, or outside Riverside Primary Academy.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those replies determine the work and the quote.

On the call itself, you hear the price — before dispatch.

Then your tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before we go, we fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
