# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Dursley: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Dursley.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — yet many newer diesels seen around Dursley and The Rangers hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Dursley: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Silver Street before work, or in the car park outside The Hoptician on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, no part stops it.

Townsend or the middle of Dursley: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Dursley forecourt or a driveway over in Kingshill, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cam & Dursley.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever around Gloucestershire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Long Street.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Dursley?

Short list, then. Top of it: the motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the Shell or somewhere else.

Your own driveway in Dursley is the place it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M5 — under 3 miles out of Dursley — at the first junction.

A short hop across Dursley is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers get there around Dursley

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it by Dursley Church of England Primary Academy, near Dursley Town Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the answers determine this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out before you have heard our quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it is left.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## Dursley and Gloucestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over GL postcodes, our vans covering Dursley — a riverside town — work the surrounding locations too, Highfields and Woodmancote among them.

A postcode starting GL11 4 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to move the vehicle.

Wherever it stands — beside Dursley Heritage Centre, on a layby heading to Dursley Recreation Ground, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Parish Church of St James the Great? By a border? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

## For Dursley people, the short version

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Gloucestershire.
