# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Duryard

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till your motor pulls it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Duryard, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Duryard, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

- Pocket your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the electrics on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a EX4 5 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up West Garth Road.

- By the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

Rolling the car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Duryard forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Exwick overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches till it is cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Duryard with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's only in your tank, nothing changes.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the car is in Stoke Hill or the centre of Duryard, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Devon the car is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Duryard

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Stoke Hill Junior School the refill is rushed.

Close to Allington Mead, a driver tips a bottle in on the drive after work.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Stables, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use least.

An identical slip, same first step — keep it off — wherever you happen to be in Duryard or the remainder of Devon.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Duryard?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

It's been pulled through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, maybe midway across Duryard or returning from West Garth Road Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Duryard lies under 5 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why a hop across Duryard to park near Roman Signal Station and a drive of under 3 miles towards Exeter are such separate jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Noticed early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Duryard?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Duryard: a side street close to Duryard Valley Park, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the work, so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, and if your engine has run.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end.

You set off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Duryard or in a space at Exeter St Davids.

Our engineers check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Duryard included

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're by a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

Duryard is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Duryard: the cost of fixing it

Not one single price could be honest, because every job is different.

What changes the cost is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Catholic Chaplaincy.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Duryard opens with the same trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before any quote.

Once they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Our quote is given during the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside your car in Duryard?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best step there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Duryard or anywhere within Devon.
