# Dutton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Dutton, catching it before your engine runs usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many modern diesels driven about Dutton and Preston on the Hill carry a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Dutton?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Northwich Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Dutton or out in Whitehouse.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Aston or a forecourt in Dutton.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you collect a rental or fleet car — from Runcorn East's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is around Cheshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Higher Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Dutton already?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor stays unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Applegreen or the Shell, ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Dutton.

Where the motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

On the M56, under 3 miles from Dutton, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Chester, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Dutton.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Dutton

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Aston by Sutton Primary School, beside Preston on the Hill Methodist Church or at home, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so we ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and then the car is tested.

Before we go, we start the car and confirm that it is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

A postcode starting WA4 4 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to shift the vehicle.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by E-Scape, or a lay-by towards Barker's Hollow.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Preston Brook Village Hall, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Dutton people, the short version

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.
