# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Earls Court: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the car stands in Earls Court, is usually what it needs when found before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Earls Court and South Kensington carry, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Earls Court

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Templeton Place, perhaps outside Earls Court Tavern on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

West Brompton or the heart of Earls Court: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Earls Court forecourt or a driveway over in Holland Park, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside West Brompton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Greater London, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Nevern Square at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Earls Court already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Eco or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own driveway in Earls Court is where it stays.

Where the motor has been run already, stop safely then turn the vehicle off.

Come off the M4 — under 5 miles out of Earls Court — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Earls Court is less work than a trip of under 5 miles to Westminster, so tell us.

## Earls Court: what takes place when our technicians turn up

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Barnabas and St Philip's CofE Primary School, close to Police Box or on your own drive.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody heads out until you've heard the quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

Shifting the vehicle is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Nevern Square Garden, a side street close to The Mosaic Rooms: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Garden Lodge - Freddie Mercury's last home? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so phone.

## For Earls Court drivers, the short version

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Greater London, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
