# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East End

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around East End, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has run.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around East End: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting MK43 0, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: the engine stays off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch up Hillcrest is too far to drive the vehicle.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any East End forecourt — the Gulf among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a car filled in Tartlett End yesterday and never switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody touches your key.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle sitting around East End. Just inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Essar and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the following fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of East End or out in West End, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Wherever across Bedfordshire the car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## East End: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

The top-up is hurried outside Cranfield Church of England Academy, after the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

Near Crane Way, someone tips a container in on the drive after work.

Otherwise, after dark by Cross Keys, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most.

Wherever in Bedfordshire, East End included, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around East End?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Broad Green or halfway across East End.

No restarting to test: stop once safe, then switch everything off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

East End lies under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across East End to the car park by Cranfield Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Milton Keynes, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's noticed soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in East End: what it takes

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around East End: a side street near Cranfield Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, about the amount, plus if your motor has run.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear away by itself.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, if your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

Then we fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Lidlington or a driveway in East End.

It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About East End and where it is

East End is a suburban area in Bedfordshire, situated approximately 44 miles north of London and 7 miles southeast of Milton Keynes. East End sits at an elevation of around 112 metres, near the villages of Broad Green and Gossards Green. East End is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. East End is also close to the settlement of Cranfield, with which it shares some local amenities.

## AdBlue drains across East End and Bedfordshire

The teams that answer AdBlue jobs around East End also cover the locations around it, Broad Green, Gossards Green and Cranfield among them, and most of Bedfordshire beyond, across the MK postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to pin down? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.

No towing is needed. In East End, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in East End

There is no honest single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

What changes the price is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Peter and St Paul.

Ahead of a figure, not after, every call from East End opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran.

Their replies shrink a range right down to one figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Alongside the car around East End, right now?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it ran are all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Bedfordshire, East End too.
