# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East End: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Around East End, catching it before your motor runs usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels around East End and Eastchurch carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around East End

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Cliff Gardens, perhaps at The Highlander on the way home that evening.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Whether it happens in Minster or the middle of East End, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Halfway Houses or a forecourt in East End, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in each filler just there.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Sheerness-On-Sea? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever it is across Kent — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Oak Avenue, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## East End: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Morrisons or another — the attendants will normally help push the car clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in East End, leave it where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M2 — under 10 miles out of East End — at the next exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across East End makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Southend-on-Sea — so tell us about how far it went.

## East End: what happens when we turn up

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Georges CofE (Aided) Primary School, near Minster Bethel Congregational Church or on your own drive.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then the tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## About East End

East End is a small suburban area on the coast of Kent, situated near the towns of Minster and Southend-on-Sea. East End has a relatively low elevation of around 40 metres above sea level and is characterized by detached housing. East End is located near several other small places, including Merrymans Hill and Scrapsgate, and is approximately 41.5 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains in East End and across Kent

Throughout ME postcodes, our vans covering East End — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Scrapsgate and Merrymans Hill among them.

A postcode starting ME12 3 gets the van to you fastest.

Your car doesn't need to move.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Minster Abbey, a lay-by on the way to The Glen, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Minster Abbey Gatehouse Museum.

## The short version for East End motorists

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep the car switched off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across Kent.
