# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East Hampnett: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around East Hampnett.

Reading in advance? Then what follows explains why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around East Hampnett and Boxgrove run, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around East Hampnett: how it happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off East Hampnett Lane, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of East Hampnett or out in Crockerhill.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a East Hampnett forecourt or a driveway over in Tangmere, take a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Barnham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across West Sussex the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Nyton Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in East Hampnett?

Brief list, then. Top of that: the motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around East Hampnett.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

On the Waterlooville Bypass, under 15 miles from East Hampnett, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing East Hampnett is smaller work than a trip of under 5 miles to Chichester, and so tell us.

## East Hampnett: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Tangmere Primary Academy, near Gospel Hall or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — what liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Then that tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it clears away unaided, however long it is left.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Anywhere it sits — near St Mary's Church, in a lay-by en route to Smith's Copse, at home — that's where it gets cleared.
