# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East Linton

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly purged where your car stands in East Linton.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## East Linton, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Pull your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting EH40 3, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.

- Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance along School Road.

- Emptying that tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

At a forecourt around East Linton, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same place the intake draws from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Traprain last night and never started stays the straightforward case, provided no one turns the key.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A motor left sitting in East Linton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Then there is the water: it brings no protection to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the JET, and the issue is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Knowes or the centre of East Linton equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in East Lothian the vehicle is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in East Linton: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it.

Mostly it's never the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up is rushed outside the local primary school, after your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Stories Park.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Crown and Kitchen.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with both fuels.

Wherever you are around East Linton or the rest of East Lothian, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in East Linton, and the engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from East Linton Park or halfway across East Linton.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M8, under 50 miles from East Linton, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

A quick hop across East Linton to the car park by John P. Mackintosh memorial is one thing; heading towards Edinburgh, under 25 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Caught early, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## East Linton: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around East Linton — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside East Linton Community Hall — our van travels to the car.

Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, plus whether your motor has been run: we check before all else, because those decide the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is emptied, on the spot.

A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't clear away on its own.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your car.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided the motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around East Linton or in a bay outside the nearest station.

Our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## About East Linton and where it is

East Linton is a town situated on the River Tyne in East Lothian, with a population of around 1879 people. East Linton has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the town is located near several smaller communities, including Phantassie and Preston. East Linton sits at an elevation of 24 metres, close to the coast and approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh. East Linton is part of the wider East Lothian area, which is known for its rural landscapes and scenic coastline.

## AdBlue drains around East Linton and across East Lothian

AdBlue call-outs in East Linton go to vans that cover the towns near it — Phantassie, Preston plus Markle — and much of East Lothian further out, across EH postcodes.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A mobile service suits East Linton, a riverside town: you have no need to take your car to us, since our engineers drain it there, in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## East Linton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest.

What shifts the price is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind East Linton Library.

That's why each call from East Linton starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

The price is given during the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## East Linton: still alongside the vehicle?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran are everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across East Lothian, East Linton too.
