# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in East Side: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where the vehicle stands around East Side, is usually all it needs when caught before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around East Side and Coytrahen carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## East Side: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Maesglas, or outside Nicholls Arms on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in West View or the middle of East Side, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Abergarw or a forecourt in East Side.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Tondu.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across Bridgend, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Heol Y Felin.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using the own spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in East Side?

Brief order, then. First: your engine remains off.

Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself runs your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in East Side? So the car stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is where to come off when you are on the M4, under 3 miles from East Side.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across East Side is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Swansea — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there in East Side, what occurs?

Wherever your car has stopped, be it by the local primary school, near Church of St David or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so our technicians ask.

The price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before we go.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

Anywhere it sits — beside Coytrahen Community Centre, on a lay-by heading to Coed Kensington, on a drive — that is where it is drained.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Calfaria Baptist Chapel? Close to a county line? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

## East Side drivers: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around Bridgend, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
