# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eastbury

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits around Eastbury, is usually what it takes when caught before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Eastbury and Batchworth Heath run, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Eastbury

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Farm Way, or heading home in the car park at The Three Wishes.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Northwood or the heart of Eastbury: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Pinner Green or a forecourt in Eastbury, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Carpenders Park? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are across Hertfordshire — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Altair Way at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Eastbury?

Brief order, then. First: your engine stays off.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Eastbury, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Come off the M1 — under 5 miles out of Eastbury — at the first junction.

A short hop across Eastbury is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Eastbury, and what occurs next

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Eastbury Farm Primary School, near Joining Force or at home, the van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine this work and our quote.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears out unaided, however long it is left.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains round Eastbury, and Hertfordshire beyond

Being a small village, Eastbury has the same vans as surrounding places — Moor Park, South Oxhey — all the way through HA postcodes and the wider area around them.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting HA6 3.

Moving the car is not necessary.

Wherever it sits — near Northwood Lawn Tennis Club, on a layby heading to Frithwood Park, at home — that is where it gets drained.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Helen's School Sports Centre, ring and ask rather than assuming.
