# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eastergate

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully rinsed where the car sits in Eastergate.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Eastergate, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting PO20 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance along Church Lane is too far to drive it.

- By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Eastergate filling station — the the nearest petrol station among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Nyton last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms.

What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car parked in Eastergate. Just in that tank, it stays the same.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in that tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Eastergate or out in Barnham, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in West Sussex the car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Eastergate

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Eastergate CofE Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Boweries Road, as the day ends.

Another version: darkness, the car park by The Wilkes Head, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new cars, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Eastergate or the remainder of West Sussex you happen to be.

## Eastergate: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Maybe coming back from Riggs Lane Play Area, or midway across Eastergate, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the Waterlooville Bypass, under 25 miles from Eastergate, at the first junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That is why a hop across Eastergate to park near Eastergate Village Hall and a drive of under 10 miles for Chichester are very separate jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where your car has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Eastergate?

A road beside St George’s Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Eastergate, our technicians come to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run, since those answers decide this work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together.

A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash away by itself.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Barnham or on a drive around Eastergate.

The check before our technicians leave is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## About Eastergate itself

Eastergate is a small village in West Sussex, situated inland near the South Downs and approximately 5.5 miles north of Chichester. Eastergate has a low elevation of around 11 metres and is surrounded by nearby villages such as Westergate, West Barnham, and Woodgate. Eastergate is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and a population of around 990 residents. Eastergate is also within commuting distance of London, being about 51.5 miles to the southwest of the capital.

## AdBlue drains across West Sussex, Eastergate included

AdBlue jobs in Eastergate are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — Westergate, West Barnham plus Woodgate — and much of West Sussex beyond, throughout PO postcodes.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Eastergate, a rural village: there's no need to take your car to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Eastergate?

Every job differs, and so not one single quote is fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Westergate Methodist Church.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, each call from Eastergate opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

The quote is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Eastergate: still next to your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Eastergate or wherever within West Sussex, once you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
