# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eastgate

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the lines — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Eastgate, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Eastgate: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it out.

- Ring right where you are. Say a PE1 5 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: the engine stays off.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Fengate Close.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Eastgate forecourt — the BP included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

A car filled on a driveway in Old Fletton yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting around Eastgate. Just inside your tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No harm is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your vehicle is in New Fletton or the centre of Eastgate, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across Cambridgeshire your vehicle sits.

## Eastgate: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

A bottle bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Bishop Creighton Academy the top-up is rushed.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Star Road.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, parked in the car park outside Sir Henry Royce.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuel types.

An identical slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Eastgate or the remainder of Cambridgeshire.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Eastgate?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Bishop's Park, or part way across Eastgate, the motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the A1(M), under 5 miles from Eastgate, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Eastgate to park beside Vivacity Regional Fitness And Swimming Centre and a drive of under a mile for Peterborough are very separate jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Eastgate?

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Eastgate: a side street near Grace Tabernacle, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, plus if your motor has turned over: we ask first, because those shape the job.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because residue won't flush away unaided.

After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, and then a test of the car.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last.

Whether it is a parking space at Peterborough or a driveway in Eastgate, that is where our engineers start it and you set off.

Before we go, our technicians check it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

Since the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Eastgate and where it is

Eastgate is a suburban area located on the riverside in Cambridgeshire, with a low elevation of around 9 metres. Eastgate sits close to the city of Peterborough, being only 0.5 miles away, and is part of the wider Peterborough urban area. Eastgate is predominantly composed of flat housing, with nearby places including Fengate and Eastfield. Eastgate is situated approximately 73.7 miles from London, in the Eastern region of England.

## Eastgate and Cambridgeshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Peterborough, Fengate and Eastfield are among the places near Eastgate that the same vans serve, along with much of Cambridgeshire further out, throughout the PE postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing if you're by a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

No moving is needed. In Eastgate, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## Eastgate: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts differ, a single price would not be fair.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind YMCA Time Stop.

Before any quote, never after, every enquiry from Eastgate begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran.

With them, a range shrinks to one firm figure.

The quote is given during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Eastgate: still beside the car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the best thing open to you.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Eastgate or anywhere across Cambridgeshire.
