# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eastney: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

In Eastney, catching it before the motor runs usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around Fratton, like those in Eastney, carry on two liquids; the engine takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Eastney: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Henderson Road, or outside Nelson's Bar on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Milton or the heart of Eastney: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Buckland or a forecourt around Eastney.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Fratton? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Hampshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Cockleshell Gardens, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Eastney: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Eastney.

Where the engine has been run already, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Eastney lies under 3 miles from the M275; there, use the first exit.

A short hop across Eastney is a smaller job than a run towards Portsmouth, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive around Eastney

By Milton Park Primary School, close to Eastney Gas Engine House or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies determine this work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

That quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, however long it sits.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and then your car is tested.

Next our technicians start it and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains across Hampshire, Eastney included

Baffins and Southsea are among the towns around Eastney, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over PO postcodes.

Quote a postcode beginning PO4 9, and our van gets there quickest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Eastney Beam Engine House, a lay-by on the way to Bransbury Park, a driveway.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Eastney Swimming Pool? By a border? Checking beats guessing, so phone.

## For Eastney people, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Keep it switched off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across Hampshire.
