# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Edgeside: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Edgeside.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to the motor — but many current diesels seen around Edgeside and Scout carry another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Edgeside?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Tom Lane before work, or in the car park at Roebuck on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour starts, no part halts it.

It's seconds, whether in Piercy or right in the heart of Edgeside.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Edgeside or a drive out in Newchurch. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Walsden, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Fearns Moss.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Edgeside: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Shell, Texaco or any other — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

At home in Edgeside? So the car stays where it is.

Where your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

Leave the M66 — under 5 miles out of Edgeside — at the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Edgeside makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Manchester — so say about how far it went.

## What happens when we get there around Edgeside

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it outside St Anne's Church of England Primary School, near St Anne or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Those answers decide this work and our price, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Then our engineers start it and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
