# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Edgware

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Edgware.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Edgware, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting HA8 8, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Don't:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start your motor.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Hale Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Edgware filling station — the Texaco among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not blend. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Burnt Oak last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Once it's pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Edgware leaves it worse. In your tank alone, time costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Canons Corner.

Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It can't just be run through, because it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Edgware Bury or the heart of Edgware equally.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Greater London your vehicle has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Edgware

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill is hurried outside Beit Shvidler Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped off.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off St. Margarets Road, as the day ends.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your car after dark, stopped in the car park by The Three Wishes.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are around Edgware or the rest of Greater London.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Edgware?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may appear, perhaps midway across Edgware or returning from Stonegrove Park.

When you safely can, pull over then switch it off — without turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Edgware sits under a mile from the M1; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That is why crossing Edgware to park beside Edgware Library and a drive of under 10 miles towards St Albans are very different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been run.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Edgware?

The car stays put, whether that is a road beside Edgware Adath Yisroel Congregation, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Edgware, and the van comes to it.

The job rests on three answers, which our technicians get before all else — what went in, the amount, and whether your engine has run.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

A careful flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't clear out on its own.

Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your vehicle.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on clean diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Edgware or in a bay by Mill Hill Broadway.

It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our technicians go.

No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## Edgware and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Edgware also cover the locations around it, The Hale, Canons Park and Little Stanmore among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the HA postcode area.

Ring and check instead of guessing if you're by a county line, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

No moving is needed. In Edgware, a small village, a mobile service fits: your car is emptied on the spot, whether in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Edgware: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, so no fixed quote is fair.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Edgware Friends Meeting House.

Ahead of a quote, not after, every call from Edgware opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus if it ran.

Once they are known, a range becomes one fixed figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Alongside the car around Edgware, right now?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing you can do.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Edgware or anywhere around Greater London.
