# Egham Hythe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump begins drawing it.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Egham Hythe.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Egham Hythe, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Take your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the amount, so don't bin it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting TW20 8, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Thorpe Road.

- Draining the tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.

Moving your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Egham Hythe forecourt you're on, the Sainsbury's included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

From a separate reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very place the pickup sucks from.

A vehicle filled on a drive in Birch Green overnight and not started since is the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

After it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels.

A motor left standing around Egham Hythe with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and this issue is thinned fuel.

Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; using the motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Whether the car sits in Knowle Green or the centre of Egham Hythe, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Wherever across Surrey the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Egham Hythe: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody means it.

Usually it is never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Hythe Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rochester Road.

Else, after dark outside The Robin Hood, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuel types.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Egham Hythe or the remainder of Surrey you happen to be.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Egham Hythe?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Bishops Way Open Space, perhaps, or midway across Egham Hythe.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M25, under a mile from Egham Hythe, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Egham Hythe to the car park by The Haven Sure Start Children's Centre is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it.

When it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Egham Hythe: what it takes

Wherever it has come to rest in Egham Hythe — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside St Paul's Church — the van comes to your vehicle.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, and if the engine has been run: our engineers check before all else, because those shape the work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through because what remains will not wash out by itself.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay by Egham or a drive around Egham Hythe, that is where our engineers start the engine and you drive off.

We make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we go.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Egham Hythe

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St John of Rochester Catholic Church.

What got in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Egham Hythe enquiry begins with exactly those, before a quote, not after.

Their replies shrink a range down to one figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
