# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Eighton Banks: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where your car is around Eighton Banks.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Lyndhurst, as well as Eighton Banks, run on two liquids; your motor takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side under one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Eighton Banks?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Long Bank before work, or in the car park outside Quarryman's Arms on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Eighton Banks or out in Low Eighton.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Eighton Banks forecourt or a drive out in Allerdene, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Heworth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around Tyne and Wear the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Brown Crescent.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its own spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Eighton Banks already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the JET, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Eighton Banks.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Eighton Banks lies under a mile from the A1(M); on it, use the next exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Eighton Banks is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Eighton Banks: what occurs when we turn up

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Anne's Catholic Primary School, Harlow Green, close to Eighton Banks Village Hall or on your own drive.

What liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because those answers set both work and quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

After the filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour once we arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
