# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Elham? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition too.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Elham, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Elham: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Remove your keys, and that stops anyone turning the power on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.

- Call just where you are. Quote a CT4 6 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- Moving your car just a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Linden Drive.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Elham forecourt you're on, the Murco or any other.

At home, your car remains just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

It does not combine. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the pickup sucks from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Acrise last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

A car left sitting in Elham with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Hawkinge Fuel Express.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Wingmore or the middle of Elham.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Wherever in Kent the car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Elham

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Usually it's never the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The top-up is rushed outside Elham Church of England Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in.

Near The Row, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Else, after dark by The Rose And Crown, your vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Leave it off: that's the first response to the same slip, anywhere in Elham or the rest of Kent you are.

## Elham: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and pipework.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Elhampark Wood, perhaps, or part way across Elham.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M20, under 5 miles from Elham, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so driving for Canterbury, under 10 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Elham to the car park by St Marys Church Hall.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

If it's caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Elham?

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a street near St. Mary's, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Elham, and our van travels to it.

What was put in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has turned over: we check first, because those shape the work.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

Testing your car follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced.

Not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Sandling or on a driveway in Elham.

It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers leave.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## About Elham and where it is

Elham is a village situated in the River Elham valley in Kent, with a mix of old and new buildings, including many detached houses. Elham sits near the North Downs, approximately 96 metres above sea level, and is close to the nearby villages of Exted, North Elham, and Ottinge. Elham is located about 8.8 miles from Canterbury and 58.8 miles from London, making it a rural community with access to larger cities. Elham has a population of around 856 people, living in a variety of detached homes.

## AdBlue drains across Kent, Elham included

The vans that answer AdBlue calls in Elham also cover the places about it, Exted, North Elham and Ottinge among them, and most of Kent beyond, across the CT postcode area.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Elham, a village, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Elham

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Elham Village Hall.

Before a quote, not after, each enquiry from Elham begins with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

While the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Next to the car in Elham, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Elham or wherever within Kent, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran.
