# Elm Estate: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Elm Estate, catching it before the motor turns normally means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Elm Estate and Common End carry, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Elm Estate?

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Barnsley Road, or at Brookside Commercial & Social Club on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

South Elmsall or the heart of Elm Estate: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Elm Estate or a driveway out in Minsthorpe. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at South Elmsall? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Exchange Street, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Step five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Elm Estate already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at JET, Shell or another forecourt will normally help to push your car clear if you ask.

Your own drive around Elm Estate is where it should stay.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

Elm Estate lies under 5 miles from the A1(M); there, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Doncaster, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Elm Estate.

## What happens when we turn up around Elm Estate

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside South Elmsall Library, or outside South Elmsall Carlton Junior and Infant School.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies settle this work and our quote.

No one sets off until you have heard the quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

As a residential suburb, Elm Estate shares its vans nearby areas — Moorthorpe, Priory Estate — all the way through WF postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a WF9 2 postcode for the van.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by The Oasis Christian Centre, or a layby on the way to Minsthorpe Park.

Assuming doesn't help behind South Elmsall and Moorthorpe War Memorial, on a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.

## In short, for Elm Estate drivers

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere across West Yorkshire.
