# Elson: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Elson, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Elson

Do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting PO12 4, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Gunners Way.

- Emptying that tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

Moving the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Elson forecourt you're on, the BP or any other.

On that drive, the car remains just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

From a separate tank it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine emits.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Bridgemary last night and never switched on remains the simple case, provided no one touches the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a car parked in Elson. Only in that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole issue.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your vehicle is in Anns Hill or the heart of Elson, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever the vehicle has come to rest across Hampshire.

## Elson: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars sits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Elson Infant School.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive near Hamlet Way.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up your car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Three Tuns.

Rented motors, new cars, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Keep it off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever around Elson or the remainder of Hampshire you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Elson, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and lines.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Elson Wood, perhaps, or part way across Elson.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M275, under 3 miles from Elson, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so driving for Portsmouth, under 3 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Elson to the car park by Gosport Budokan Centre.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's spotted soon.

## Elson: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Physical Training Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest around Elson, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the work.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the vehicle.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided your motor hasn't run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, your system is bled with fresh diesel.

Then our technicians start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Portsmouth Harbour or a driveway around Elson.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A van that comes to you suits Elson, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your vehicle to us, since our technicians empty it on the spot, on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## Elson: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so no fixed quote is honest.

Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind St Thomas the Apostle.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Elson begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid was put in, how much, if the engine ran — before any figure.

Their answers shrink the range right down to a single number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## In Elson and still next to the car?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran is all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across Hampshire, Elson too.
