# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ely

Stop reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car is in Ely.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Ely and Little Downham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Ely

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off High Street before work, or in the car park at The Minster Tavern heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing halts it.

Stuntney or the middle of Ely: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Little Thetford or a forecourt around Ely, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Cambridgeshire that is.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside St Mary's Street on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Ely: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the Tesco, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Ely.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Leave the M11 — under 15 miles out of Ely — at the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Ely is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Cambridge — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we get there in Ely

The van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Ely Cathedral Conference Centre, or outside Lantern Community Primary School.

Those answers determine the work and our price, so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Before leaving, we fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## Ely and Cambridgeshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Quickest of all: give a CB7 4 postcode to the van.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

The drain takes place right there, whether a drive, a street near The Lighthouse, or a layby on the way to Bishop's Garden.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Ely Museum? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Cambridgeshire.
