# Emerson Park: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Emerson Park, finding it before the engine turns normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Emerson Park and Harold Wood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Emerson Park: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Nelmes Crescent, or on the way home in the car park outside Hop Inn Micropub.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Emerson Park or out in Ardleigh Green.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Upminster or a forecourt around Emerson Park, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Greater London that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of The Sheilings.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Emerson Park?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Emerson Park, leave it where it sits.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M25 — under 3 miles out of Emerson Park — at the next exit.

A short hop across Emerson Park is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Emerson Park: what happens when our engineers turn up

The van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Emerson Court, or by Nelmes Primary School.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers decide this work and our quote.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of that washes out on its own, however long it is left.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
