# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Endcliffe Edge

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Endcliffe Edge.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels in Summerfield, like those in Endcliffe Edge, carry on two liquids; your engine gets just the diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Endcliffe Edge: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Endcliffe Hall Avenue, or at The Florentine on the way home after work.

New-to-you vehicles come second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Endcliffe Edge or out in Tapton Hill.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Greystones or a forecourt around Endcliffe Edge.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Sheffield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in South Yorkshire that is.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Endcliffe Vale Road at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Endcliffe Edge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Esso, JET or another — the staff will usually help push the car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Endcliffe Edge.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Leave the Tinsley Viaduct — under 10 miles out of Endcliffe Edge — at the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Endcliffe Edge is a smaller job than driving under 3 miles towards Sheffield — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Endcliffe Edge, and what occurs next

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside St Marie's School, A Catholic Voluntary Academy, beside Churro or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those replies set the work and quote.

Nobody heads out until you have heard the quote by phone.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Before we leave, we start it and check that it is running properly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
