# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Endmoor

Leave your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Endmoor, finding it before the motor turns normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels around Crooklands, like those in Endmoor, run on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Endmoor

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Woodside Road, or outside The Club Inn on the way home after work.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Preston Patrick or the middle of Endmoor, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Stainton or a forecourt around Endmoor, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Oxenholme Lake District? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Cumbria that is.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Woodside Crescent.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Both behind a single flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Endmoor?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at John Dickson & Co., Texaco or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

Your own drive in Endmoor is the place it should stay.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off.

The next exit is the place to come off when you are on the M6, under a mile from Endmoor.

Distance matters — a short hop across Endmoor makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Lancaster — so say about how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in Endmoor, what happens?

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it by St Patrick's CofE School, beside Endmoor Village Hall or at home, the van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, since those answers settle this work and the price.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the price by phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away by itself. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Endmoor, and Cumbria beyond

Over LA postcodes, our vans that cover Endmoor — a village — work the nearby spots too, Summerlands and Gatebeck included.

Give a postcode that starts LA8 0, and our van gets there quickest.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Preston Patrick Hall, a lay-by on the way to Birks Wood, a driveway.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Patrick’s, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## For Endmoor people, the short version

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Cumbria.
