# Enstone: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

In Enstone, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Enstone: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting OX7 4, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up The Drive.

- Draining that tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Enstone forecourt you are on, the Texaco included.

On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a car topped up in Cleveley yesterday and not switched on stays the simple one, as long as nobody turns the key.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages.

Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting around Enstone. Only inside that tank, it stays stable.

And there is the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

No harm is done while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only once your engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Lidstone or the centre of Enstone equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in Oxfordshire the vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Enstone?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it.

Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver buys a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Enstone Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car.

In the evening, a container goes in on a drive close to Bicester Road.

Otherwise, after dark by The Harrow Inn, your vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever around Oxfordshire, Enstone as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

## Enstone: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Perhaps coming back from Enstone Playing Field, or midway across Enstone, your motor may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M40, under 10 miles from Enstone, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why crossing Enstone to park beside Saint Kenelm and a drive of under 15 miles for Oxford are such different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has ended up.

Permanent damage is very rare when it's spotted early.

## Enstone: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Bath House, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has stopped around Enstone, our technicians travel to it.

What went in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, since those shape the job.

Then the tank is drained where the car stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear away on its own.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the final step.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Charlbury or on a drive around Enstone.

Before leaving, our engineers check it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Enstone itself

Enstone is a village in Oxfordshire, situated near the River Evenlode, with a mix of old and new buildings, including many detached houses. Enstone sits at an elevation of 131 metres, surrounded by rolling countryside and woodland. Enstone is located near other small settlements, such as Church Enstone and Neat Enstone, and is close to the city of Oxford. Enstone has a population of around 629 people, living in a variety of housing types, predominantly detached homes.

## Enstone and Oxfordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Church Enstone, Neat Enstone and Fulwell are among the towns near Enstone that the same vans serve, along with most of Oxfordshire further out, throughout the OX postcode area.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A mobile service fits Enstone, a village: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it there, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## Enstone: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be fair.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Nether Chalford.

That is why each call from Enstone starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Given them, the range narrows to one firm number.

Our price is given during the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Enstone: still beside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Enstone or wherever within Oxfordshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran.
