# Epworth: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Epworth.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Epworth and Isle of Axholme carry a second liquid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Epworth: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Albion Hill before work, or in the car park outside Queens Head Hotel on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Epworth or out in Low Burnham.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Carrhouse or a forecourt in Epworth, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Crowle, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Lincolnshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not rushed beside Church Street on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Epworth?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Shell or any forecourt will usually help pushing your car away if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Epworth.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you're on the M180, under 3 miles from Epworth.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Epworth is less work than a trip of under 15 miles to Doncaster, and so tell us.

## Epworth: what occurs when our engineers arrive

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Imperial Hall, or by Epworth Primary Academy.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the answers decide the work and price.

During the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it is left.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting DN9 1.

No need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it sits — beside Mechanics Institute, on a layby en route to Atech Arena, on a drive — that's where it gets emptied.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Epworth Community and Youth Hub.

## The short version for Epworth people

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere around Lincolnshire.
