# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ermine? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car stands in Ermine.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Ermine, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting LN2 2, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Blankney Crescent.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

Ask the attendants to help you roll the car off the island if you are on a forecourt around Ermine, whether it's the Gulf or elsewhere.

At home, your car remains just as it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A motor filled on a driveway in Burton-by-Lincoln yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting till morning in Ermine makes it worse. In your tank alone, time does nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

Mixed into the diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; running the motor is the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in New Boultham or the middle of Ermine.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Lincolnshire the car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ermine: how it ends up there

Many cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody means it.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Ermine Primary Academy, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway close to Brattleby Crescent.

One more version: dim light, the car park by The Lincoln Imp, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the other vehicle in a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever you are in Ermine or the rest of Lincolnshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ermine?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Via your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Perhaps returning from Sobraon Park, or part way across Ermine, your engine might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out.

No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then turn it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Ermine sits under 25 miles from the M180; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards Lincoln, under 3 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Ermine to the car park by Saint John the Baptist.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

When it is noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Ermine: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Ermine: a side street near Sports Pavilion, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The job rests on three replies, which our technicians ask for first — what went in, the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the car sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear out on its own.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of the car.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step.

Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Lincoln Central or on a driveway around Ermine.

It's checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers head off.

We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No moving is needed. In Ermine, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## Ermine: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Yarborough Leisure Centre.

That's why every call from Ermine starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
