# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Etchinghill: Why It Occurs

Keep the engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Etchinghill, catching it before your motor turns normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Yewtree Cross, as well as Etchinghill, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Etchinghill: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a driveway off Canterbury Road before work, or in the car park at The Gatekeeper Inn on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Etchinghill or out in Newbarn.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Postling or a forecourt in Etchinghill, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Sandling, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Westfield Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Etchinghill?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

At home in Etchinghill? So the car remains where it is.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

On the M20, under 3 miles from Etchinghill, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Etchinghill is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles to Canterbury, so tell us.

## Our arrival around Etchinghill, and what takes place next

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Etchinghill Village Hall, or outside Lyminge Church of England Primary School.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those answers determine this work and our price.

No one heads out until you have had our quote over the phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
