# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Etterby: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't run, it is drained and fully rinsed where your vehicle is in Etterby.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near Etterby and Willow Holme run, with diesel feeding the engine.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Etterby?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off St Ann's Road before work, or in the car park at Redferne Inn on the way home.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Edentown or the heart of Etterby: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Etterby or a driveway over in Stanwix. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many cars mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Carlisle's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in Cumbria the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Etterby Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Etterby?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Morrisons or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Etterby, leave the vehicle where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next exit means where to come off when you're on the M6, under 3 miles from Etterby.

A short hop across Etterby is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Etterby: what takes place when our technicians get there

By Stanwix School, near Sheepmount Athletics Stadium or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The answers settle this work and the price, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Cumbria, Etterby included

Being a residential suburb, Etterby shares its vans surrounding areas — Belah, Stainton — right across CA postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a CA3 9 postcode to the van.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Wherever it stands — near St Mark's Church, on a lay-by heading to Sheepmount Sports Field & Athletics Track, at home — that is where it is emptied.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Fusion Trampoline Park? By a border? Checking beats guessing, and so phone.

## The short version for Etterby people

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere across Cumbria.
