# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ewanrigg: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits around Ewanrigg, is usually all it takes when caught before your motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Glasson, like those in Ewanrigg, run on two fluids; the engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Ewanrigg: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Festival crescent before work, or in the car park outside Swan Inn on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Ewanrigg or out in Ellenborough.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Kirkborough or a forecourt in Ewanrigg.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show what goes in each inlet right there.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Maryport, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Cumbria the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Melbreak Avenue.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Ewanrigg: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Essex Garage, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Ewanrigg? So the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Leave the M6 — under 50 miles out of Ewanrigg — at the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Ewanrigg makes a smaller job than heading under 50 miles to Carlisle — so tell us about how far it went.

## Ewanrigg: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Ellenborough Academy, close to Elenborough Methodist or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run, since those answers decide this work and the quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and confirm that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
