# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ewell? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition too.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens until the motor pulls it through.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in Ewell.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Ewell, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so don't throw it out.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a KT17 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- Shifting your car even a short way is no reason to start your motor.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way up West Street is too far to drive it.

- Draining the tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Ewell forecourt you're on, the Esso or any other.

If you're on your own drive, leave it exactly where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in North Looe yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Ewell. Just in your tank, it stays the same.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole problem.

No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Epsom or the middle of Ewell.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere in Surrey the car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

## Ewell: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it's never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Ewell Grove Primary and Nursery School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car.

A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off High Street, as the day ends.

Another pattern: dim light, the car park outside The Spring Tavern, and a driver using that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new vehicles, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

An identical slip, an identical first response — keep it off — anywhere you are around Ewell or the remainder of Surrey.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ewell?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Bourne Hall Park or halfway across Ewell.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Ewell sits under 5 miles from the M25; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Ewell to the car park by Bourne Hall is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is noticed quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Ewell?

A road by Bourne hall, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped around Ewell, our technicians come to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run, since those answers determine this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when the tank is emptied, on the spot.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because residue will not wash out unaided.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of the car.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

Whether it is a parking space outside Ewell West or a driveway around Ewell, that is where we start the car and you drive off.

It is tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers head off.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## AdBlue drains in Ewell and across Surrey

East Ewell, Stoneleigh and West Ewell are among the places near Ewell that the same teams reach, along with most of Surrey further out, throughout the KT postcode area.

Near a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

Ewell is a riverside town, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Ewell: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind Main Hall.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, every call from Ewell begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

With those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## In Ewell and still alongside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best move open to you.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.
