# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fagwyr

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump begins pulling it.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Fagwyr.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Fagwyr, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and about what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.

- Tell us a postcode starting SA6 5, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to start your engine.

- Many diesels power their pump the moment the ignition goes on, so leave the vehicle off.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.

- Even a short stretch along Ffordd Ellen is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

At a forecourt in Fagwyr, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Upper Forge last night and never started stays the straightforward case, as long as no one touches the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels.

A motor left sitting around Fagwyr with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No damage is done as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Graigfelen or the middle of Fagwyr.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Wherever around Swansea the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Fagwyr: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — may appear the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Fagwr Isaf.

Otherwise, in dim light by New Inn, your car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical slip, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Fagwyr or the rest of Swansea.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Fagwyr, and your engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Through the filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

Maybe coming back from Graig-felen Plantation, or midway across Fagwyr, your engine might go lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M4, under 3 miles from Fagwyr, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why a hop across Fagwyr to park near Salem Chapel and a drive of under 10 miles for Swansea are very distinct jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Permanent damage is very rare if it is caught early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Fagwyr: what it takes

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Fagwyr: a side street close to Canolfan Adnoddau Cymunedol Forge Fach, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the work, and so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear out by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed your system on new diesel.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, outside Llansamlet or on a drive in Fagwyr.

Before leaving, our engineers make sure it is running correctly with fresh diesel in.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Fagwyr

Since each jobs differ, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Dynamic Rock.

For that reason, every enquiry from Fagwyr opens by asking the identical trio — what went in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Once those are known, a range turns into one firm figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
