# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Failand: Why It Happens

Leave the motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Failand.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Failand and Ashton Watering run, with diesel for the engine.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Failand

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Sixty Acres Close, or outside Failand Inn on the way home after work.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip begins, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Tyntesfield or right in the heart of Failand.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Failand or a driveway out in Long Ashton. Seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark what goes in which filler right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Shirehampton's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever in Somerset, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Chelsea Mews.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read the cap.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Failand already?

Don't start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — MFS, Esso or another — the staff will usually help roll the vehicle away, when you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Failand, leave the car where it sits.

Where your engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

The next exit is where to leave when you're on the M5, under 3 miles from Failand.

A short hop across Failand is a smaller job than a run towards Bristol, under 5 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up around Failand, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Flax Bourton Church of England Primary School, near Failand Village Hall or on your own drive.

The answers settle this work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Somerset, Failand included

Lower Failand and Cambridge Batch are among the towns near Failand, a rural village, that the same teams cover, over BS postcodes.

Give a postcode beginning BS8 3, and the van gets there quickest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Pavillion, a lay-by on the way to Wraxall Piece, a driveway.

Assuming won't help at the back of Tyntesfield House, on a border, or anywhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

## For Failand drivers, the short version

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Somerset, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
