# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fair Oak

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your engine off then keep the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands around Fair Oak.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fair Oak

Things to do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the power on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly how much volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting RG19 8, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Do not:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along Little Knowl Hill.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Fair Oak, whether it is the Murrays Service Station or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Kingsclere Woodlands last night and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out.

Lines holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting around Fair Oak. Just in the tank, it stays stable.

The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and the issue is thinned fuel.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; using the motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Axmansford or the heart of Fair Oak equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Anywhere in Hampshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Fair Oak

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs invite it.

Mostly it is not the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Ashford Hill Primary School.

Near Holt Cottages, a driver pours a container in on the drive in the evening.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Ship.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels.

Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Fair Oak or the rest of Hampshire you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Fair Oak?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Expect rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Greenland Copse, say, or part way across Fair Oak.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Fair Oak, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Fair Oak to the car park by Ashford Hill Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Fair Oak?

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street near Saint Paul's Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Fair Oak, and our van travels to it.

Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, plus whether the motor has been run: we check before all else, because those decide the work.

Then that tank is cleared where your car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the system is bled with new diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay outside Midgham or a driveway around Fair Oak, that is where we fire it up and you head off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## Fair Oak: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, and so no single price would be honest.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Saint Catherine's Church.

Before any figure, not after, each enquiry from Fair Oak begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## In Fair Oak and still beside the vehicle?
