# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fairdown? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump starts pulling it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Fairdown.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fairdown

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so don't throw it away.

- Call just where you are. Say a SO23 8 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the engine stays off.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way down Quarry Road.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

The staff working at any Fairdown filling station — the Tesco among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

On the drive, your car stays exactly where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same spot the pickup sucks from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Highcliffe last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

It eats at some metals found in fuel components, working on any part it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

Overnight, a car sitting around Fairdown with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only inside the tank, it doesn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

No damage comes as long as it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Wharf Hill or the centre of Fairdown alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Hampshire your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Fairdown?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Winnall Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Alresford Road.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside The Golden Lion, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with both fuels — the cars people use the least.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever in Fairdown or the remainder of Hampshire you happen to be.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fairdown?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps midway across Fairdown or returning from Chesil Wood.

When safe, stop then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Fairdown sits under a mile from the Winchester Bypass; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Winchester, under a mile away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Fairdown to the car park by Saint Swithun's Performing Arts Centre.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been running.

When it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Fairdown?

A road beside Winnall Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest in Fairdown, we come to it.

Three answers decide the job, so first we ask what was put in, roughly the amount, plus whether the engine has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than with petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Winchester or on a drive in Fairdown.

Before we leave, our engineers check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Fairdown, briefly

Fairdown is a suburban area situated near the city of Winchester in Hampshire, with Fairdown being a residential community at an elevation of 82 metres above sea level. Fairdown sits inland, approximately 0.7 miles from Winchester's centre, and Fairdown is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Fairdown is part of the larger Winchester urban area, with nearby places including St Giless Hill, Winnall, and The Soke.

## AdBlue drains across Hampshire, Fairdown included

St Giless Hill, Winnall and The Soke are among the places near Fairdown that the same teams reach, together with much of Hampshire further out, throughout the SO postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a border or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Fairdown is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Fairdown: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat price could be fair, since each job differs.

What changes the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

That's why every call from Fairdown starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

When they are known, a range becomes one fixed number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Alongside the car around Fairdown, still?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Fairdown or anywhere within Hampshire, after you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran.
