# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fairlop

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and keep your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till your motor pulls it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Fairlop, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Fairlop: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting IG6 3, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Never do these:

- Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.

- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down The Bungalows.

- By the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

At a forecourt in Fairlop, whether it is the JET or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

At home, the car stays exactly where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It does not blend. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Grange Hill overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

After it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning in Fairlop leaves things worse. In your tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the following fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Fairlop or out in Barkingside, costs more than nearly any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Greater London your vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fairlop: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Usually it is never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School.

Close to Inverness Drive, a driver pours a bottle in on the drive in the evening.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, stopped in the car park outside The New Fairlop Oak.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other car of a home with both fuels.

Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, wherever in Fairlop or the rest of Greater London you are.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Fairlop?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.

Perhaps coming back from Fairlop Waters Country Park, or part way across Fairlop, the engine might run rough, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or cut out.

Once you safely can, stop and turn it off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M11, under 3 miles from Fairlop, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Fairlop to the car park by Fairlop Waters Commemorative Sculpture is a very different job from a run towards London, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

When it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Fairlop: what it takes

Wherever it has come to rest in Fairlop — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street beside Powerleague Fairlop — our van comes to the vehicle.

Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, because those decide the work.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains will not clear away by itself.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay by Goodmayes or a driveway around Fairlop, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Fairlop, briefly

Fairlop is a small suburban area in the London Borough of Redbridge, situated on the River Roding at an elevation of around 33 metres. Fairlop lies approximately 11.5 miles northeast of central London, near the suburban centres of Fullwell Cross, Hainault, and Aldborough Hatch. Fairlop is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, with many residents living in apartments. Fairlop remains a relatively quiet and residential community within the Greater London area.

## AdBlue drains in Fairlop and across Greater London

Our teams that answer AdBlue jobs in Fairlop also cover the spots around it, Fullwell Cross, Hainault and Aldborough Hatch among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the IG postcode area.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No towing is needed. In Fairlop, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied on the spot, whether in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Fairlop?

Since each callouts differ, a single price would not be honest.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind London Marathon Playing Fields.

What went in, how much, plus if the engine ran: every Fairlop call opens by asking exactly those, before any figure, not afterwards.

When those are known, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

The price is given on the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Fairlop: still alongside the vehicle?

Not touching your car is, then, the best move you can do.
