# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Fairwater? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Fairwater.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Fairwater, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NP44 4, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way down Ton Road.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Fairwater forecourt — the Shell included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ty Canol last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches till it's removed from your system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow channels.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Fairwater leaves it worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Colley Motor Group's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the whole issue.

Blended through the diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; running your engine is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Fairwater or out in Hollybush, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Torfaen the car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Fairwater?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Usually it is never the filling station: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Close to Fairwater Close, a driver tips a container in on that drive in the evening.

Else, after dark outside Blinkin Owl, the car is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare car in a home with one of each fuel types.

Wherever across Torfaen, Fairwater as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## Fairwater: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the fuel filter and pipework.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from Coed Meyrick-moel, perhaps, or midway across Fairwater.

When safe, stop then switch everything off — without restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M4, under 5 miles from Fairwater, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Fairwater to park near Fairwater Leisure Centre and a drive of under 5 miles for Newport are very separate jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been running.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's spotted quickly.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Fairwater

Wherever it has stopped around Fairwater — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road beside Fairhill Methodist Church — our van travels to your car.

The work rests on three replies, which we get before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and if your motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains will not flush away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, if your motor has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on clean diesel.

You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Fairwater or in a bay at Cwmbran.

We check it runs properly on new diesel before we leave.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## AdBlue drains around Fairwater and across Torfaen

AdBlue jobs in Fairwater are passed to teams that cover the places near it — St Dials, Greenmeadow plus Coed Eva — and most of Torfaen beyond, throughout NP postcodes.

Assuming won't help close to a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

Fairwater is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Fairwater: the cost of fixing it

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Coed Eva & Hollybush Community Centre.

Which fluid went in, how much, plus if it ran: each Fairwater call opens with exactly that, before a quote, not afterwards.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Next to the vehicle in Fairwater, still?

Not touching the car is, right now, the best move open to you.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across Fairwater or anywhere within Torfaen, after you call 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
