# Fallside: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't run, it's emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle sits in Fallside.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Fallside and Tannochside carry, with diesel for your motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Fallside

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off McCulloch Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Jazz Cafe on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Fallside or out in Viewpark.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Uddingston or a forecourt around Fallside, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bellshill.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in North Lanarkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of John Brannan Way.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check again — confirm the diesel cap remained closed throughout. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Fallside: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — BP, Shell or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Fallside.

Already run? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

Fallside lies under a mile from the M74; there, take the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Fallside.

## What takes place when we get there in Fallside

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Fallside Community Centre, or by the local primary school.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it sits.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Then we start the car and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

## Fallside and North Lanarkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout G postcodes, the teams covering Fallside — a residential suburb — work the surrounding locations too, Bellshill and Orbiston among them.

A postcode starting G71 6 gets the van to you fastest.

The car stays put.

The drain happens right there, whether a drive, a road by Jimmy "Jinky" Johnstone, or a lay-by on the way to Fallside Nature Park.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Robertson Park, ring and ask rather than assuming.
