# Farm Town: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Farm Town, finding it before the motor turns usually means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Farm Town and Sinope carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## Farm Town: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Loughborough Road, perhaps at Brewers Fayre on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Church Town or the middle of Farm Town, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Outwoods or a forecourt in Farm Town, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Willington, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are in Leicestershire — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Ashby Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Farm Town?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco or somewhere else.

On your own drive in Farm Town? So your car stays put.

Where the motor has run already, stop somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

The next exit means where to leave if you are on the M1, under 10 miles from Farm Town.

A short hop across Farm Town is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Farm Town, and what occurs next

By Viscount Beaumont's Church of England Primary School, near St Mary's or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The answers decide the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

On the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

Before we go, our technicians start it and confirm that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
